Another Georgia lineman has been sidelined due to offseason surgery.
John Theus, a freshman who started all 14 games for the Bulldogs at right tackle, underwent foot surgery on Wednesday at St. Mary's Hospital and will miss at least some of spring practice. The 6-foot-6, 309-pounder from Jacksonville had a fractured fifth metatarsal (the outside bone that leads to the pinky toe) on his right foot. Ron Courson, UGA's director of sports medicine, expects a full recovery before next season.
It was not immediately known if he suffered the injury during the season or sometime since. Theus came to Gerogia as a 5-star-rated recruiting prospect and became just the third player since freshman became eligible to start a season opener at the tackle position. Not only did he play in every game, but he played almost every snap of every game.
Theus joins fellow offensive lineman Chris Burnette on the disabled list. Burnette, who starts alongside Theus at right guard, underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder on Jan. 15. Burnette is expected to miss all of spring practice but also is expected to return in time for preseason camp.
Midyear enrollee Tramel Terry, a wide receiver from Goose Creek, S.C., also underwent knee surgery Jan. 4. Whether he'll be able to recover in time to play this coming season is unknown.
