Georgia’s wide receiver corps looked like it belonged in South Bend, Ind., rather than Athens on Wednesday with all the players it had dressed in Kelly green.

That happens to be the color of jerseys the Bulldogs wear to signify that a player is injured and not to be involved in contact. There were five receivers donning those duds during the first of Georgia’s two practices on Wednesday. That number did not include Malcolm Mitchell, who has not been on the practice field since being sidelined with minor arthroscopic knee surgery the day before preseason camp opened.

The latest on most notable addition to the green group was sophomore flanker Reggie Davis. The 6-foot, 170-pound speedster from Tallahassee had his entire left hand in a club cast. While he practiced and went through most of the Bulldogs’ drills, he obviously could not catch any footballs.

“He looked like he had a driver taped to his palm today,” noted quarterback Hutson Mason. “Coach (Mike) Bobo was like, ‘Hey Reggie, come over here,’ and (Davis) shows him this ball taped around his arm. ‘You think he’s going to catch anything? He’ll have to catch it with one arm and bring it into his chest.’”

Mason said it was his understanding Davis had either a minor fracture or severe jam of at least one finger on the hand and that the Bulldogs were just being very protective of it.

“It’s something with his finger,” Mason said. “I don’t know if he jammed it real bad or what. … (But) I didn’t hear anything about him being out for a long time at all.”

Also wearing green among the receivers Wednesday were Chris Conley, Isaiah McKenzie, Kenneth Towns, Justin Scott-Wesley and Clay Johnson. Scott-Wesley had knee surgery late last season but Georgia has not disclosed the nature of any of the other injured players. But with the exception of Mitchell, none appear in jeopardy of missing playing time early in the season.

“It just kind of seems like that’s been the story of camp, guys with little injuries that are keeping them out,” Mason said. “So I’m looking forward to finishing up these three days strong, get a day or two off and start to game plan for Clemson. Those two days off will really help refresh our guys and hopefully get some guys back.”
