The Atlanta Journal-Constitution asked fans to name some of their favorite plays from the rivalry between Georgia and Georgia Tech. Here is one of those plays:
Final score: Georgia 29-28, Dec. 2, 1978.
The play: Facing fourth-and-3 at the Tech 43-yard line, Buck Belue scrambled right and, under pressure, hit an uncovered Amp Arnold along the right sideline for a touchdown.
Memories: "It was a special moment," said Arnold, 52, who is a sales representative for the Nakanishi Manufacturing Corporation in Winterville.
“I was surprised that play was going to be for me,” he said. “I hadn’t done much until that point. I remember coming out of the huddle saying, ‘This is mine, this is mine.’”
The Belue-to-Arnold connection wasn’t done.
The Bulldogs went for the two-point conversion and Belue pitched to Arnold, running a reverse off an option, to earn the victory.
He said he has a painting and other memorabilia from that game that fans have sent over the years.
“It was one of the most memorable wins,” Arnold said.
