Georgia Tech Athletic Director Mike Bobinski put a hammer on the reported candidacy of California coach Cuonzo Martin for the basketball coaching opening.

At the quarterly meeting of the school’s athletic association board Thursday, Bobinski gave an update on the search and mentioned a Wednesday report about a coach who was said to have emerged as Tech’s primary candidate. Bobinski made an oblique reference to Martin, saying the report was “about a coach that’s on the West Coast at this point in time.”

The reference was to a report Wednesday, citing unnamed sources, that indicated that Tech had made Martin a prime target and had "zeroed in" on him as the successor to Brian Gregory, who was dismissed March 25.

Bobinski called the supposed candidacy a “complete fabrication” and “100 percent, unequivocally untrue,” sharing his frustration that the story had taken a life of its own.

Bobinski also said that a large percentage of reports about the search are “wholly inaccurate” and that he will never share a list of candidates with media.

“Trust me, a lot of what has been reported and said has no relation to fact or reality,” he said. “Take that for what it’s worth.”
