Best quarterbacks in UGA history

Aaron Murray could finish his career with almost every passing record at Georgia, but will he be remembered as the best QB in school history?

Aaron Murray owns several school passing records and is moving up the chart among all-time statistical leaders in the SEC.

Murray, a junior, has 9,664 career passing yards and could shatter the school and conference passing mark if he returns for his senior season. Would you rank Murray as the best QB in UGA history? Here are some others that would certainly rank among the best in school history.

If Murray becomes the SEC's all-time passing leader, he would also hold the school record since former UGA QB David Greene currently holds both records. The lefthander passed for 11,528 yards during his four seasons in Athens and led the Dogs to the 2002 SEC championship.

Matthew Stafford was a Bulldog for only three seasons, but showed enough on the field to become the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft. The current Detroit Lion passed for 7,731 yards and 51 TDs at UGA and also led the team to three bowl victories. But Stafford might be remembered most for being the QB on the '08 squad which was ranked No. 1 in the preseason but finished the season with three losses.

Eric Zeier made his mark during his four seasons (1991-94) under center at UGA, passing for 11,153 yards and establishing several school and SEC records. Zeier started on the '92 squad which finished 10-2 and won the Citrus Bowl.

Other top QBs might not have the big passing numbers while playing in more run-first offenses, but made their mark by winning. Buck Belue passed for 1,314 yards and 11 touchdowns in 1980 - 92 of those yards on a famous catch and run by Lindsay Scott against Florida.

Current UGA offensive coordinator Mike Bobo passed for 6,334 yards and 38 touchdowns from 1994-97 and had a pair of big victories - the overtime win at Auburn in '96 and the 37-17 victory over Florida in '97.

Former UGA head coach Ray Goff was the SEC player of the year as the QB of Georgia's 10-2 conference championship squad in 1976.

Fran Tarkenton led UGA to the 1959 SEC championship and was named an All-American in 1960. Tarkenton later played 18 seasons in the NFL and is a member of the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame.

Zeke Bratkowski was a two-time All-American (1952, '53) and led the nation in passing in 1952. Bratkowski played 14 seasons in the NFL followed by a 26-year coaching career.

John Rauch started 45 straight games at QB from 1945-48 and was SEC player of the year and an All-American in 1948. Rauch became a successful coach after his playing career, coaching the Oakland Raiders to the Super Bowl in 1967.
