2014 college football coaching changes

A look at the coaching carousel across college football for 2014 season.

Florida, OUT: After going 4-4 in the SEC in his fourth season, the Gators dismissed Will Muschamp as head coach. Muschamp went 28–21 in Gainesville and led the Gators to a Sugar Bowl bid in 2012. Muschamp was hired as defensive coordinator at Auburn.

Colorado State, OUT / Florida, IN: Jim McElwain replaced Will Muschamp at Florida job after three seasons at Colorado State. McElwain won a pair of BCS titles as Alabama's offensive coordinator

Colorado State, IN: Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo replaces Jim McElwain in Fort Collins. Bobo, a former Georgia quarterback, led the Bulldogs’ record-breaking offenses since taking over as the coordinator in 2007.

Michigan, OUT: After starting out 11-2 in his first season, Brady Hoke's Wolverines won fewer games each of his four years in Ann Arbor. Hoke went 31-20 overall but only defeated rivals at Michigan State and Ohio State just twice in eight tries.

Michigan, IN: John Harbaugh, a star quarterback for the Wolverines in the mid-1980s, signed on to coach Michigan after a disappointing season with the NFL's San Francisco 49ers. Harbaugh coached the Niners to three straight NFC Championship games and a Super Bowl berth. Harbaugh went 58-27 overall as a college coach at San Diego and Stanford, including a 29-21 record in four seasons with the Cardinal.

Nebraska, OUT: Bo Pelini went 67-27 in Lincoln and never won fewer than nine games in a season. Pelini never took the Huskers to a BCS bowl in seven seasons. Pelini was hired to coach at Youngstown State, an FCS school in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Oregon State, OUT / Nebraska, IN: After 14 seasons and 93 wins at Oregon State, Mike Riley opted for a move to the Big Ten to replace Bo Pelini as the Huskers' head coach.

Wisconsin, OUT / Colorado State, IN: Gary Andersen won 19 games in just two seasons in Madison after arriving from Utah State. Andersen led the Badgers to a Big Ten Championship bid in 2014.

Pitt, OUT / Wisconsin, IN: Paul Chryst was hired as the third coach at Wisconsin since 2012. Chryst played quarterback for the Badgers from 1986-88 and was an assistant for Wisconsin on two occasions, the last in 2005 as offensive coordinator. At Pitt, Chryst went 19-19 overall and 10-13 in ACC play with three bowl bids.

Kansas, OUT: Charlie Weis was dismissed four games into his third season in Lawrence. Weis went 6-22 overall with the Jayhawks, defeating only one Big 12 opponent in 19 tries.

Kansas, IN: David Beaty, a former offensive coordinator for the Jawyhawks, was serving as the receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at Texas A&M.

SMU, OUT: June Jones resigned after as the Mustangs' head coach after an 0-2 start in 2014. He went 36–43 in seven seasons at the Dallas school.

SMU, IN: Clemson's offensive coordinator Chad Morris returns to Texas, where he coached high school football, to replace June Jones as head coach at SMU.

Buffalo, OUT: Jeff Quinn was dismissed seven games into the 2014 season. He went 20-36 in five seasons with the Bulls.

Buffalo, IN: Lance Leipold holds the NCAA record for reaching 100 wins in the fewest games, needing just 106, at Wisconsin-Whitewater. Leipold won five Division III national titles in eight seasons.

UNLV, OUT: Bobby Hauck went 15-48 in four seasons, leading the Rebels to a 7-6 record and bowl berth (the program's first since 2000) in 2013.

UNLV, IN: Tony Sanchez, who won six state titles in six years at Las Vegas' Bishop Gorman High, takes over as the Rebels' 11th head coach. Sanchez replaces Bobby Hauck, who left with a 15-49 record after five seasons.

Tulsa, OUT: Bill Blankenship, an Oklahoma high school Hall of Fame coach, went 19-8 in his first two seasons at Tulsa. The Golden Hurricane, however, were only 5-19 the last two seasons, including a 2-10 mark in 2014.

Tulsa, IN: Baylor offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery takes over as Tulsa's 29th head football coach. Montgomery, who spent the last seven seasons with the Bears, called plays for an offense ranked among the nation's top two in each of the past four seasons.

Houston, OUT: Three years after replacing Kevin Sumlin as head coach, Houston dismissed Tony Levine, who went 5-7, 8-5 and 7-5 during his tenure.

Houston, IN: Ohio State offensive coordinator Tom Herman replaces Tony Levine as the Cougars' head coach. Herman, a Cincinnati native, spent the first 10 years of his career coaching in the state of Texas before becoming offensive coordinator at Iowa State from 2009 to '11. The Buckeyes went 36-3 in three seasons with Herman as playcaller.

Troy, OUT: Larry Blakeney racked up 175 victories since coming to Troy in 1991 - the seventh-highest total among active coaches. Blackeney announced his retirement in October.

Troy, IN: Kentucky offensive coordinator Neal Brown was a former Trojan play-caller. He was at Lexington for two seasons. Brown, 34, will be the second-youngest FBS head coach behind Western Michigan's P.J. Fleck.
