Georgia scored two runs in the fourth inning and held on to defeat Kennesaw State 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon in Kennesaw.

In the fourth, Nelson Ward of the Bulldogs (11-19) reached on a leadoff error and Curt Powell was hit by a pitch. Hunter Cole lined a single to left that scored Ward, and Powell took third on the play. Kyle Farmer made the score 2-0 with his team-leading sixth sacrifice fly.

The Owls (17-12) cut the deficit to 2-1 in the seventh. Ryan Raper led off with a walk and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kal Simmons.

Mercer 10, Georgia Tech 1: The Bears scored seven runs in the eighth inning to pull away from the visiting Yellow Jackets.

Kyle Wren had two of Tech’s season-low five hits and extended his hitting streak to 17 games. Matt Gonzalez’s single in the fourth produced the only run for Tech (21-8) and his 30th RBI of the season.

Mercer (24-8) hit three home runs and had 13 hits. Travis Benn was 2-for-4 with two homers and five RBIs.

Softball

Georgia State 7, Kennesaw State 3: Jessica Clifton had two hits, including a double, and scored two runs, stole a base and drove in a run as the Panthers defeated the host Owls.

Callie Alford and Ashley Christy both had a pair of RBIs for Georgia State (22-11). The win was the Panthers’ seventh in the past nine games. The Owls (23-11) have lost six consecutive.

Golf

Kennesaw State women: The Owls turned in their lowest 18-hole score of the season to finish a season-best third at the Challenge at Onion Creek in Austin, Texas. KSU shot an 8-over 288 to finish at 30-over 870 for 54 holes — eight shots behind first-place Gonzaga.
