UGA running back Nick Chubb receives a lot of compliments, but Herschel Walker‘s latest comments might be the best compliment of all.
The Bulldogs' Heisman Trophy winner told ESPN's College Football Daily that he considers Nick Chubb similar to the running backs of old.
Walker: “Nick Chubb is a throwback. Let me tell you the reason I say he is a throwback. We got running backs today, and they are getting the ball 15 times, maybe 20, at the very most. But Nick Chubb is a throwback, you can give him the ball 30 times a game, and next week you can give it to him again and he is ready to go.”
Chubb topped the 30-carry mark for the Bulldogs three times last season, including his first career start against Missouri, and averaged over 6 yards-per-carry in those starts.
In today’s pass-first brand of football, running backs who can run the ball every play have been traded out in favor of more versatile players. But according to Walker, Chubb’s ability out of the backfield should not be overlooked.
“One thing that is great about him is that he can catch the ball as well,” Walker said. “The same as with myself. People sometimes did not realize I could catch the ball because Georgia never threw me a pass.”
Of course, the Bulldogs hope that Chubb won’t need to shoulder the load this season as Georgia’s backfield is among the best in the country. If they do have to rely on their first-team All-SEC back, however, at least they can rest easy knowing he has the former UGA-great’s endorsement.
“Nick Chubb is a great athlete,” Walker exclaimed. “He is not just a great running back, he is a great athlete.”
