“They took up a lot of blocks today. We were able to run around, make a lot of plays, so we give credit to them for taking up the blocks because they’ve got the hardest job out there.”

— Georgia Tech linebacker Brandon Watts on the defensive line

“We missed a read or two, but all in all, it’d be hard to fault him much. I think we scored a touchdown every possession he was in, so it would be hard to do a whole lot better.”

— Tech coach Paul Johnson on quarterback Vad Lee

“He caught everything that came his direction, I think, but the one ball down the sideline that really shouldn’t have been thrown to him. Micheal’s going to grow and get better the more he plays. I’ll watch the tape and see how he blocked. But I thought he played well. He made a big catch on the deep ball, caught the hitch, made the guy miss, got a crucial first down early in the game. He did OK for his first start.”

Johnson on wide receiver Micheal Summers

“That long pass down the field, it was a duck, but, hey, he went to go get it. That’s a confidence builder for me, knowing that I can trust him going deep and know that I can throw any kind of ball and he’ll go get it. That was big time.”

Lee on Summers

“Six-of-16 (on third-down conversion defense), I’m sure if coach (Ted) Roof was here, he’d tell you he’d like to be better than that. Bottom line is, they didn’t score. That’s what happens when you get turnovers like that. I mean, the game was out of reach. Really, the offense didn’t have to do anything. We started the game, the defense got a couple turnovers and the game’s gone.”

Johnson on the defense

“Obviously, we feel unstoppable right now. That’s what you do with Game 1. You take it, you run with it, you’ve got to get better. We can’t get complacent and think that we’re already unstoppable because I’m pretty sure teams are out to get us this year.”

Lee

“I think he did good for his first start. It’s not his first time playing, but when you actually get to start, you might have to deal with a little bit of nerves, but he was pretty calm. He kept everybody even-keeled and kept ’em loose.”

— B-back David Sims on Lee's starting debut

“David had some really long runs, and I got on him for some really bad ball security, so he’s got that to work on. He didn’t fumble the ball, but he’s going to if he doesn’t learn to tuck it away. I think he’d be the first to tell you. David’s healthy, and I think you’re going to see a different guy. When he’s healthy, he can be a really good player, I think.”

— Johnson on Sims

“I wanted to show people what I could do and give them a good first impression. As soon as I got out there, I knew it was going to go well. I was excited about it.”

— Tech kicker Harrison Butker on his career debut

“We had a good trip down here and wanted to get off to a good start, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. We had the turnover early, second or third play of the game, and then the blocked punt, so it was 14-0 right off the bat.”

— Elon coach Jason Swepson
