Unrestricted free agent Andrew Bynum picked the Cavaliers over the Hawks and Mavericks.
News of the oft-injured center’s decision was first reported by ESPN and followed by several other media outlets Wednesday night. Bynum met with the Cavaliers on Monday and left with a two-year, $24 million contract offer. He met with the Hawks on Tuesday and the Mavericks on Wednesday. According to the reports, the Cavs offer called for $6 million in guaranteed money in the first year with added incentives. The second year was a club option.
“It was the best situation,” Bynum’s agent David Lee told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “The team looks terrific. We could not find a negative.”
The 25-year-old Bynum did not play last season as a member of the 76ers as he battled knee problems that required surgery.
Schroeder signs
First-round draft pick Dennis Schroeder announced on social media that he signed a contract with the Hawks.
“Its official! I signed the contract with the Atlanta Hawks!! Im Glad to be here :-) #ATL,” the point guard tweeted Wednesday afternoon.
The Hawks did not announce the signing.
Schroeder, the 17th overall selection last month, will participate for the Hawks in the Las Vegas Summer League. The team had to work through contractual issues with FIBA, basketball’s international governing body. The 20-year old played professionally in his native Germany before declaring for the draft. The Hawks team, already practicing in Las Vegas, opens summer league play Friday.
The Hawks have not signed fellow first-round pick Lucas Nogueira.
Summer League update
Quin Snyder will initially coach the Hawks summer league team. The assistant will assume the role in place of head coach Mike Budenholzer. It is not uncommon for assistants to coach summer league teams.
The Hawks will open a minimum five-game schedule against the Clippers.
The Hawks have yet to announce their roster for the league. Known players who will participate include John Jenkins, Mike Scott, Shelvin Mack, Jared Cunningham, Kyle Weems, second-round pick Mike Muscala and Schroeder.
Hawks talking to Tolliver
Unrestricted free agent Anthony Tolliver is talking to five teams, including the Hawks, according to a person familiar with the situation. Tolliver played last season for the Hawks. The forward hopes to make a decision soon.
