Atlanta United Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra has been added to the board of the Unified Bid Committee trying to bring the 2026 World Cup to the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The addition of Bocanegra, Julie Foyd and U.S. Soccer Federation President and CEO Ed Foster-Simeon was announced on Friday. Bocanegra hasn’t responded to a request for an interview.

Atlanta is one of the 40 cities that have been contacted by the Unified Bid Committee about being a possible host site for the world's largest soccer tournament.

Bocanegra is formerly a veteran in MLS as well as clubs in Europe. He was also captain of the U.S. men’s national team. He played in two World Cups.

The other members of the Board of Directors are Sunil Gulati (Chairman), Steven Reed (Canada), Peter Montopoli (Canada), Decio De Maria (Mexico), Guillermo Cantu (Mexico), Carlos Cordeiro (USA), Donna Shalala (USA), Dan Flynn (USA), Don Garber (USA) and Victor Montagliani (CONCACAF).

Potential hosts must let FIFA know by Aug. 11 if they are going to compete to host the tournament. The bid to host the World Cup must be submitted by March 16, 2018. The U.S. previously hosted the tournament in 1994.
