How the winning run scored: Gwinnett scored twice in the top of the ninth but could not make up a three-run gap as the G-Braves dropped the first of four games at Buffalo's Coca-Cola Field. The Bisons' Jim Negrych drove in the game-winner with on a sacrifice in the eighth, scoring Andy LaRoche for a 5-2 lead. LaRoche also homered to lead off the sixth. Gwinnett lost for the 14th time in 18 games and fell to 28-44, the worst record in the International League.

At the plate: Todd Cunningham had a two-run single for the G-Braves in the third for a short-lived 2-1 lead. Gwinnett's Tyler Pastornicky and Ernesto Mejia both had fielder choice RBIs in the ninth before Joey Terdoslavich ended the game with a fly-out to left.

On the mound: Gwinnett starter Omar Poveda (5-4), a winner in his last two starts, gave up three earned runs but took the loss. He gave up nine hits, including LaRoche's home run, in seven innings, striking out five while walking three.

Up next for Gwinnett: The G-Braves play the second game of a four-game series in Buffalo. Gwinnett's starting pitcher has yet to be determined.
