The 16 players on the Hawks summer league roster have now all seen playing time. That’s about the best one can say about the 84-74 loss to the NBA Development League Select Team on Monday.
The Hawks changed their rotations, starters and bench, and have gotten at least a look at their entire Las Vegas Summer League roster. The Hawks (1-2) completed their three-game schedule. The seeded portion of the tournament will begin after Tuesday’s games. The Hawks will play at least two more games.
The Hawks were outscored 30-13 in the second quarter and the D-League opened up a 50-34 halftime lead. The Hawks trailed by more than 20 points by the fourth quarter.
Lamar Patterson led the Hawks with 15 points. Edy Tavares had a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds and Glenn Robinson III added 10 points.
The Hawks used a different starting lineup than their previous two games beginning with DeAndre Kane, Patterson, Robinson, Brandon Ashley and Tavares. Mike Muscala and Stephen Holt did not play.
Holt keeps track of Hawks
Holt was all ready for a second summer league with the Hawks.
The guard played for the Hawks’ Las Vegas Summer League entry last year. He returned this year after playing in Germany, going to training camp with the Cavaliers and playing a season in the NBA Development League with the Canton Charge.
“I actually wrote down all the plays on my phone and so I had it coming into this second summer league,” said Holt, who has started the Hawks’ first two games. “I just looked at my phone real quick to try to memorize the plays before we even started practice just so I could be familiar with the system.”
Holt, a 6-foot-4 point guard, was impressive in summer league last year. He then played in 49 games, including 44 starts, for the Charge and averaged 10.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.3 steals in 29.6 minutes.
“I had a really great stint with them last year and when my agent said I had an opportunity to come back a second time at this summer league I jumped on it,” Holt said. “The style that they play fits my game really well – very unselfish, move the ball and it’s all about team. That’s what I’m all about.”
Tavares a work in progress
Tavares, the Hawks 7-foot-3 center, has taken some time to adjust to the pace of play during the first summer league games after spending last season in Europe. He has looked a step or two behind the play much of the time.
Hawks assistant Kenny Atkinson had some candid comments about Tavares following Sunday night’s game.
“This is just the feedback I’m getting from him, I think the pace of the game is so different than Europe and he is just adjusting to the pace, and then adjusting to what we are doing,” Atkinson said. “He forgot a lot of what we are doing last year. His team in Europe was playing a totally different pick-and-roll coverage. But we are on him. We are watching film with him. I think it’s pace and figuring out what we are doing. I was excited. He made a few plays at the end of the game. He’s got to be smarter about not fouling when the other team is in the bonus. It’s a great learning opportunity for him. What is better than this for him?”
In the first two games, Tavares averaged 5.0 points (5 of 11), 5.5 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 3.5 blocks and 5.5 fouls in 19.0 minutes.
Hawks down Warriors
The Hawks lost several regular-season games last year on buzzer-beaters and it nearly happened to them Sunday night in a Las Vegas Summer League game. The Warriors’ LaDontae Henton missed a 3-pointer with .9 seconds left – but not before it circled the rim – and the Hawks won a 71-70 decision at the Thomas and Mack Center.
Patterson made one of two free throws with 11 seconds remaining to give the Hawks the lead before the late-game dramatics.
Robinson and Holt each had 13 points to pace the Hawks.
