Spirit owners thank fans in letter

Jan 4, 2011

In an open letter to Hawks and Thrashers fans following the Atlanta Spirit ownership group's recently settled lawsuit with former co-owner Steve Belkin, team owners Michael Gearon and Bruce Levenson reiterated their dream to bring NBA and Stanley Cup championships to Atlanta.

"Come be part of the dream," read the letter, which was sent out Tuesday morning in fan newsletter e-mails and posted on the teams' websites.

Levenson and Gearon thanked fans for their support during "a very unique set of circumstances." It was a reference to the protracted six-year legal battle Belkin had with the other partners of the Atlanta Spirit over how much they should pay Belkin to buy out his 30 percent share of the Hawks, Thrashers and Philips Arena.

The lawsuit was settled Dec. 23. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"(W)e thank you for sticking with our teams through it all," the letter read.
