Recent Atlanta Hawks top picks

The Hawks hold the 17th and 18th overall picks in the 2013 NBA Draft. The Hawks' history has been littered with some successes and misses.

2001: Pau Gasol started his NBA career with the Hawks. Atlanta used the No. 3 pick overall in '01 to take the Spanish forward, then immediately traded his rights to Memphis for Shareef Abdur-Rahim. The next three players drafted: F Eddie Curry (Bulls), G Jason Richardson (Warriors) and F Shane Battier (Grizzlies).

2001: This was the Hawks' most hectic draft night in recent years. As part of the deal that sent Gasol to Memphis, the Hawks received one of the Grizzlies' first-round picks, at No. 27. Atlanta used it to take guard Jamaal Tinsley. But the Hawks then traded him to Indiana for a future draft choice. Next three guys: G Tony Parker (Spurs), G Trenton Hassell (Bulls), G Gilbert Arenas (Warriors).

2003: With the 21st pick of the first round, the Hawks drafted little-known French player Boris Diaw. He never made an impact here, and the Hawks eventually traded him to Phoenix as part of the Joe Johnson deal. The next three: F Zoran Planinic (Nets), F Travis Outlaw (Blazers) and F Brian Cook (Lakers).

2004: The Hawks had two first-rounders this year, and used the first (at No. 6 overall) on Stanford forward Josh Childress. The next three: F Luol Deng (Suns), C Rafael Araujo (Raptors), F Andre Iguodala.

2004: Eleven picks after Childress, the Hawks took another Josh: native Josh Smith, who had starred at McEachern High School before transferring to Oak Hill Academy in Virginia. The next three: G J.R. Smith (Hornets), F Dorell Wright (Heat), G Jameer Nelson (Nuggets).

2005: The Hawks held the No. 3 pick overall and used it to select North Carolina forward Marvin Williams. The next three: G Deron Williams (Jazz), G Chris Paul (Hornets), C Raymond Felton (Bobcats).

2006: Armed with a top 10 pick for the third straight year, the Hawks used the fifth choice overall on Duke center Shelden Williams. The next three: G Brandon Roy (T-wolves), G Randy Foye (Celtics), F Rudy Gay (Rockets).

2007: Once again, the Hawks had two first-round choices, the first of which was the third overall. They used it to draft Florida center Al Horford, who went on to be runner-up for Rookie of the Year. The next three: G Mike Conley Jr. (Grizzlies), F Jeff Green (Celtics), F Yi Jianlian (Bucks).

2007: Only eight slots later, the Hawks used the No. 11 pick overall to take Texas A&M point guard Acie Law IV. The next three players taken: F Thaddeus Young (Hornets), F Julian Wright (Hornets), F Al Thornton (Clippers).

2009: With the 19th overall pick, the Hawks selected Wake Forest guard Jeff Teague. The next three: G Eric Maynor (Jazz), G Darren Collison (Hornets), F Victor Claver (Trail Blazers).

2010: The Hawks selected guard Damion James with the 24th overall pick, then traded James to the New Jersey Nets for the 27th overall pick Jordan Crawford and the rights to German center Tibor Pleiss. (The Hawks then sold his rights to the Oklahoma City Thunder.) The next three: G Dominique Jones (Grizzlies), G Quincy Pondexter (Thunder), G Jordan Crawford (Nets).

2012: Guard John Jenkins (Vanderbilt) was the Hawks' top pick in 2012, selected 23rd overall. The next three: G Jared Cunningham (Cavaliers), G Tony Wroten (Grizzlies), F Miles Plumlee (Pacers).
