As planned, the Hawks requested waivers on John Salmons Thursday. The team made the announcement Friday morning.

The Hawks traded Lou Williams and the draft rights to Lucas Nogueira to the Raptors in exchange for Salmons and a 2015 second-round draft pick last month.

The Hawks had a deadline of 11:59 p.m. Thursday to waive Salmons. The teams agreed to a waiver deadline extension of Thursday in the deal. Salmons, who is due $7 million this season, will receive a $1 million buyout. The move clears salary cap space for the Hawks. The team has approximately $11 million in salary cap space.

The waited until near the deadline to request waivers on Salmons as they explored options to acquire another asset, either a player or a draft pick, in a trade.
