A weighted lottery is used to determine the top three picks via a random drawing of ping-pong balls.
The Hawks have about a 14 percent chance of winning the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft lottery.
The Phoenix Suns, who at 21-61 had the league’s worst record, hold the highest chance at the top pick with 25 percent. The other top suitors are the Memphis Grizzlies (20 percent) and the Dallas Mavericks (14 percent).
The Hawks tied for the NBA’s third-worst record with Dallas. The Hawks will select no later than seventh.
The remaining lottery teams are selected in reverse order of record after the top three.

The 14 teams that did not make the playoffs are normally eligible for the lottery draft. It has been a while since the Hawks have been a part of the process.
The Hawks have had just six lottery picks since 2000. The last Hawks lottery pick was forward Al Horford in 2007. Horford, a four-time All-Star in Atlanta, helped lead the Hawks to nine consecutive playoff births.
The Hawks introduced Lloyd Pierce as their new head coach Monday. Jami Gertz, the wife of Hawks owner Tony Ressler, will represent the Hawks during the televised portion of tonight's drawing.
