CLARKE SCHMIDT RHP
Selected by the Yankees with the 16th pick

The Yankees sided with the medical arts with this pick. Schmidt, a standout at Allatoona High School, went down with a torn ulnar ligament in his right (pitching) elbow in late April, underwent Tommy John surgery and will be unavailable until late spring 2018, if then.
But Schmidt’s pedigree is unchallenged. An elite starter in the SEC, he was 4-2 with a 1.34 ERA in nine starts when he was injured and opponents were hitting only .194 against him. In 60 1/3 innings, he allowed 41 hits and 18 walks while striking out 70.
His senior season at Allatoona was almost untouchable. He went 8-2 with 100 strikeouts in 55 innings pitched.
