Matt Wisler might win the spot-start Cy Young. But the rest of the Braves couldn’t make the most of his outing.
The Braves lost to the Marlins 2-0 Friday in the opener of a three-game series at SunTrust Park. Wisler gave the team 5 1/3 innings of two-run ball.
He was recalled from Triple-A earlier in the day. After Thursday’s rainout, the Braves opted to give lefty Sean Newcomb an extra day’s rest and roll with Wisler.
It wasn’t his first well-pitched spot-start of the year. Wisler went seven one-run innings against the Mets on April 19.
The Marlins broke through in the sixth. J.T. Realmuto tripled and Starlin Castro doubled for a pair of runs.
Dan Straily was phenomenal for Miami. The left-hander pitched seven shutout innings and retired the last 11 Braves he faced in order.
The Braves’ best chance came in the fourth. Freddie Freeman walked and Nick Markakis doubled to give the team two runners in scoring position with none out. Tyler Flowers popped out to second, and the Marlins intentionally walked Ender Inciarte to face Jose Bautista with the bases loaded.
Bautista struck out on four pitches. Johan Camargo flew out to center to end the inning.
The loss dropped the Braves to 9-9 at home as opposed to 17-8 on the road. They’re 15-15 in night games against 11-2 during the day.
