JUPITER, Fla. — Braves pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts and only two walks in nine innings Thursday in a 5-2 Grapefruit League win against the Marlins, including eight strikeouts and one walk in six innings by four relievers.
“I was really impressed with all the pitchers,” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “Wink (reliever Dan Winkler). Lucas Sims got himself in a little trouble, but he got himself right out of it.”
Winkler pitched a perfect eighth inning with two strikeouts, and Sims had four strikeouts while allowing one hit and one walk in two scoreless innings.
“Offensively we did a nice job with moving the runners, especially in the last inning with (Ozzie) Albies and Boni (Emilio Bonifacio) driving them in,” Gonzalez said. “Overall it was really a good game.”
The Braves led 3-2 before adding two runs in the ninth inning. Reid Brignac doubled, advanced on an Albies groundout and scored on Bonifacio’s triple. Chase d’Arnaud added an RBI double.
