What the Braves said after being shut out by the Marlins

Video: How Braves starter Matt Wisler fared Friday.

The Braves’ National League-leading offense was silenced by Dan Straily, resulting in a 2-0 loss to the Marlins on Friday night.

It wasted a solid spot-start from Matt Wisler, who went 5 1/3 innings and gave up a pair of runs.

The home team’s only real scoring chance came in the fourth, when it had two on, none out and the bases loaded with one out. Jose Bautista struck out and Johan Camargo flew out to end the inning.

Here’s what the Braves said afterwards:

Manager Brian Snitker:

On Wisler:

“I thought he did a great job. Gave us a chance. About as good as you can get, really. I thought he did a great job.”

On his slider:

“That breaking ball, pitching with that and using his fastball to set that up, it’s made a big difference. It’s been the key for him. A lot better breaking ball than I’ve ever seen him have. It’s been really good to see. You forget he’s just a young guy. He’s still learning. He’s got a long way to go in his career. You never know. You keep running young guys out there and keep pitching and maybe they figure out how to get it done.”

On Luiz Gohara:

“He’s good. It’s getting better and better. We just keep running him out there. I see it just keeps ticking up.”

On Straily:

“I don’t know. He moves the ball around, he changes speeds. He pitches around his fastball. He’s just hard to get ahold of.”

Starter Matt Wisler:

On his start:

“It was crazy travel today, but my biggest thing is giving the team a chance to win today. It’s tough to see those two pitches overall beat me at the end, but it felt good. Team played well tonight, just came up a little short.”

On his slider:

“A lineup with seven righties, I knew I’d throw a lot of sliders to these guys. Lefties is where I break out the other pitches. Righties I’m predominantly fastballs and sliders. So I knew coming into the game I was probably going to throw a lot.”

Progression he’s made this year:

“I’ve felt good pretty much every single time out. … I still felt really good, just one or two pitches from being really good.”

Outfielder Nick Markakis:

On the improved pitching depth:

“He (Wisler) did a great job. Even that pitch J.T. (Realmuto) hit was a good pitch down in the zone. He just went down and got it. Pretty good swing on it. He pitched well today, just came up short. Their guy pitched a little better than us.”

On the fourth inning:

“It’s tough. Bases loaded, one out and you’ve got your guys up you want to be in that situation. Their pitcher did a better job getting out of jams like that. We’ve got to put it behind us. We’ve still got two more games before we head out.”

On Straily:

“I don’t know what it is, but he pitches well against us. He changes speeds, puts the ball where he wants, doesn’t make too many mistakes. That’s what veteran pitchers do.”
