Anthony Varvaro remains on the paternity leave list.

Manager Fredi Gonzalez said Varvaro indicated that the birth of his child would likely come Thursday. However, as of late afternoon Gonzalez said he had not heard whether the child had been delivered.

“I’m hoping everything is good,” Gonzalez said.

The Braves placed the right-handed reliever on the paternity leave list Wednesday and recalled Gus Schlosser from Triple-A Gwinnett.

In other lineup news:

* Andrelton Simmons was given a day off Thursday. Ramior Pena started at shortstop in his place.

* Evan Gattis was back in the lineup Thursday. The catcher was given Wednesday off after he caught two straight days following his return from the disabled list. Gattis missed 19 games with a bulging thoracic disc.

“Going forward we will do that,” Gonzalez said of resting Gattis. “Three or four days then off, like we did at the beginning of the year. Keep him healthy and keep him fresh.

“Plus, you feel good (getting Gerald) Laird (in a game). He gives you a great at-bat. He does a great job with the pitching staff. You have to give him some at-bats here and there.”
