When second baseman Ozzie Albies and pitcher Lucas Sims made their major league debuts Tuesday against the Dodgers, they became the first Braves teammates to start together in their first game since pitcher Al Santorini and catcher Walk Hriniak did it Sept. 10, 1968.
Sims, a 2012 first-round draft pick from Brookwood High School in suburban Atlanta, allowed three runs and six hits with no walks in six innings for a “quality start” in his debut, though the Braves lost 3-2 to run their losing streak to six games.
Albies went 0-for-2 with a walk in three plate appearances, scoring on fellow rookie Johan Camargo’s two-run homer in the eighth inning.
At 20, Albies became the youngest current player in the major leagues and first-ever major leaguer born in 1997. He also was the 15th major leaguer from the island nation of Curacao and the fifth to play for the Braves, joining Andruw Jones, Andrelton Simmons, Jair Jurrjens and Randall Simon.
