Turner Field: Home of the Braves

Turner Field has served as home of the Atlanta Braves since 1997. Originally the Olympic Stadium for the 1996 Games in Atlanta, Turner Field underwent a large renovation to fit a baseball field, where lots of history has been made.

Olympic Stadium, renamed Turner Field, rose across the street from Atlanta Fulton-County Stadium before the 1995 season. Fulton-County Stadium served as the home of the Braves from 1966 until 1997, when the Braves moved the Olympic facility that was later outfitted for baseball.

Renovations to turn Olympic Stadium into a baseball facility began after the Games closed in 1996. The outlines of the track field are still visible as work progressed in October of 1996. While not large, Turner Field remained larger than most new MLB stadiums. The fence line around the north main entrance, beyond right field, marks the original extent of Centennial Olympic Stadium.

Braves fans enjoyed games at Fulton-County Stadium for nearly 30 years before the team moved across the street to Olympic Stadium, which would later be renamed Turner Field in 1997.

The facility, whihc seats will seat more than 45,000 was built in the parking lot of Fulton County Stadium (background) and would replace that stadium as the home of the Braves.

Fans can look out from the support structure and top rows of stands of Atlanta Fulton County Stadium to view the shaping of Atlanta's new Olympic Stadium rising from a former parking lot.

A popular name for the new stadium was Hank Aaron Stadium. The Braves settled on Turner Field after the franchise's colorful owner. The city of Atlanta renamed the section of Capitol Avenue on which the stadium sits Hank Aaron Drive, giving Turner Field the street number 755, after Aaron's home run total.

The home of the Braves since 1997, the Braves leased Turner Field from the City of Atlanta. The lease expires after the 2016 season.

The first postseason game played at Turner Field was also during the 1997 season between the Braves and the Houston Astros in the National League Division Series. Starting pitcher Greg Maddux pitched a complete game, giving up only one run and leading the Braves to a 2–1 victory.

The highest recorded attendance for a playoff game, and overall, at Turner Field was recorded on Oct. 5, 2003, when the Chicago Cubs played to Braves in the NLDS in front of 54,357 in a standing-room only crowd.

Rising above Sky Field in left field is a giant Coca-Cola Bottle and Chick-fil-A rally cow. The modern glass bottle, featuring a video screen replaced an home-run celebration bottle in 2009. Many of the pieces of the original bottle are now on display at the World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta.

After 12 years and more than 1,000 home-run celebrations, the 42-foot-tall Coca-Cola Contour bottle at Turner Field was retire in 2009. The bottle was made of more than 11,000 pieces of authentic Atlanta Braves baseball equipment including 6,680 baseballs, 290 bats and 86 gloves.

In 2008, a Chick-fil-A rally cow joined the area known as Sky Field above left field. Fitted with a Braves hat, the cow does the Braves' tomahawk chop while holding a sign with rotating slogans tied to the Atlanta fast-food chain.

For 14 straight seasons the Atlanta Braves put up a pennant at Turner Field. The team commemorated its run in 2013 with a flag display that spread across the infield.

Turner Field has hosted one World Series in its short lifetime. Thousands of fans lined up in the cold of October in 1999 for a chance to purchase tickets for the series between the Atlanta Braves and the New York Yankees.

The Atlanta Braves' lone World Series appearance at Turner Field was a short one. The Braves were swept at home (and in the series) by the New York Yankees.
