5 things to know about Braves reliever Anyelo Gomez

Anyelo Gomez will be one of many competing for a spot in the Braves’ bullpen this spring.

Here are five things to know about the 24-year-old:

When acquired: The Braves took Gomez from the Yankees in December's Rule 5 draft. He must be kept on the 25-man roster for the entire season or the Braves have to offer back to New York for $25,000.

What to expect: Gomez joins Dan Winkler as Rule 5 picks vying for a bullpen spot. He boasts a low-90s fastball and an above-average change-up.

Summary of career: Gomez posted a 1.92 ERA with 87 strikeouts and 21 walks over 38 games (70 1/3 innings) at four minor-league levels last season. He registered a 2.45 ERA with 21 strikeouts and eight walks in 18 1/3 innings in the Dominican Winter League.

Career highlight: Gomez allowed runs in only three of his 38 minor-league appearances in 2017. He collected two or more strikeouts in 15 games.

Something you didn't know about him: Gomez signed with the Yankees as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic in November 2012. His strikeout numbers last season ranked best among Yankees farmhands.
