Swanson out of Braves lineup Friday vs. Marlins

James Dansby Swanson was born Feb. 11, 1994 in Kennesaw, Georgia. Swanson played college baseball at Vanderbilt. He was the first player taken in the 2015 MLB draft, by Arizona. The Braves acquired Swanson from the Diamondbacks on Dec. 9, 2015, in the Shelby Miller trade. The Braves also acquired Ender Inciarte. Swanson, who played at Marietta High School in metro Atlanta, made his major league debut Aug. 17, 2016. Swanson was 2-for-4 in that debut against the Twins. His first hit was a single off Kyle Gi

Dansby Swanson was out of the Braves’ lineup Friday because of a minor left quad injury suffered at some point during Thursday’s win over Philadelphia.

Swanson showed up at the ballpark and was ready to play against the Miami Marlins in the opener of a three-game series at SunTrust Park, but manager Brian Snitker opted to keep his hot-hitting shortstop on the bench.

“We want to stay ahead of it,” Snitker said.

Swanson may also be withheld from the lineup Saturday. But Snitker would like Swanson to start Sunday and play at least one game before the All-Star break. Swanson is available as a pinch-hitter and could play if needed.

Johan Camargo got his sixth start at shortstop and batted eighth in the lineup.

Swanson has been on a roll. He was 3-for-5 with a double, two home runs and five RBIs against in the Braves’ 12-6 victory against Philadelphia. He hit .385 in the three games against the Phillies and extended his hitting streak to seven games.

Swanson has 17 homers, matching Jeff Blauser (1997) and Andrelton Simmons (2013) for the most by an Atlanta-era Braves shortstop. The full-season franchise record is 20 homers, set by Denis Menke of the 1964 Milwaukee Braves.
