The Mets didn’t clear the infield in two innings against Sean Newcomb. Outside a pair of walks, the Braves lefty showcased the ability he’s still trying to harness.

Newcomb glided through a five-pitch first. After quickly retiring the first two hitters of the second frame, he issued back-to-back four-pitch walks. He escaped the inning with an infield pop-up.

“I felt pretty good, everything was coming out nice,” Newcomb said. “I got to touch up on everything so that was good.”

Inconsistent command is the story with Newcomb. His ultimate ceiling will be determined in how he trims the walk total.

The southpaw added he was encouraged by so much weak contact. He thought his first time working with catcher Brian McCann was “crisp.” It was McCann’s first game of spring.

“He’s been grabbing a lot of us younger guys every day, talking about little things here and there, and it’s definitely coming off on us,” Newcomb said.
