Former Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz will sign Wednesday with the St. Louis Cardinals after being released by the Boston Red Sox, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. Smoltz will become the Cards’ fifth starter after clearing waivers at noon, the paper said, citing anonymous sources.
Smoltz is the only pitcher in major-league history with 200 wins and 150 saves. The Red Sox designated the former NL Cy Young Award winner for assignment Aug. 7 before placing him on waivers Monday. The Cardinals would be responsible for assuming the balance of Smoltz’s $5.5 million contract.
Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak declined comment, but a team source told the newspaper an announcement would be made Wednesday.
Smoltz will join two former Brave teammates -- third baseman Mark DeRosa and starting pitcher Adam Wainwright -- who both reportedly lobbied with Cardinals officials to sign Smoltz.
Smoltz, 42, was released after compiling a 2-5 record and 8.32 ERA with the Red Sox. He is 14 months removed from shoulder surgery that ended his career with the Braves.
