Former Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez is returning to baseball with the Miami Marlins.
Gonzalez, 52, was fired by Atlanta in May after a 9-28 record to begin the season. He had previously managed the Marlins to a 276-279 record from 2007 to 2010.
Gonzalez will join Don Mattingly's staff as the third base coach. Gonzalez has previously served as a third-base coach with the Marlins and under Hall of Fame manager Bobby Cox in Atlanta.
Gonzalez's return to the Marlins had been highly speculated when Tim Wallach was considered a candidate for the Colorado Rockies' managerial opening that went to former Padres manager Bud Black.
Jon Heyman of Fan Rag Sports reported the move officially Monday.
Gonzalez had a 434-414 record as Braves manager from 2011 to 2016.
