When it rains it pours, when it comes to trying to fit in the final games of the Major League Baseball season while also facing Mother Nature.
The battle of time vs weather has cost one Minnesota Twins pitcher a bonus payout, ESPN is reporting.
Phil Hughes was going to get paid an additional half a million dollars if he pitched 210 innings during the regular season. But that was before a storm delayed the game Wednesday between the Twins and the Arizona Diamondbacks for 66 minutes. Hughes, according to CBS Sports, left the game throwing only 96 pitches.
With the rain delay, ESPN reported Hughes has pitched for 209 2/3 innings. It's that missing 1/3 inning, or a single out, that will cost Hughes $500,000.
If there was no delay, Twin's manager Ron Gardenhire said Hughes would have pitched the ninth inning and that he won't be on the mound for his weekend's final regular season games against the Tigers, according to MLB.com.
Despite not earning that huge payout, Hughes did break a record this inning. MLB.com said he set the league's single-season strikeout-to-walk record.
Minnesota ended up winning their final home game of the season with a 2-1 win over the Diamondbacks.
