Thursday’s update on Nick Markakis was a continuation of the past two days: He’s about ready to return, almost certainly Friday in Washington, and will man left field upon returning from a fractured wrist.

Markakis took batting practice Wednesday and again Thursday, when he also ran the bases and slid without any difficulties. Base-running drills were the final box to check in Markakis’ comeback.

“He did everything,” manager Brian Snitker said. “He slid, ran the bases, hit again. He was good. We’ll evaluate tomorrow when we get to D.C. and see how he is. But he felt great. Everything was good after yesterday.”

Snitker reiterated the team will play Markakis in left field, shifting over from his usual right. It allows Matt Joyce to handle right-field duties, where the veteran feels more comfortable.

It won’t necessarily be a full-time move, but with the Braves slated to face three righties in Washington, Markakis will at least play three consecutive games in left (assuming he is indeed activated before Friday’s game) with Joyce in right.

The decision to play left exclusively or split time between the corner outfield spots will be up to Markakis, Snitker said.
