Braves pitching prospect Sean Newcomb took a no-hitter into the sixth inning Thursday night in Double-A Mississippi’s 7-4 win at Biloxi.
Two outs into the sixth, a single up the middle by Domingo Santana broke up the no-hit bid, but Newcomb finished the inning before leaving the game. In his six innings, he allowed two hits (both singles) and one earned run while issuing three walks and recording seven strikeouts.
Biloxi scored its only run off Newcomb without the benefit of a hit. Newcomb walked the first two batters of the fourth inning. The next batter grounded to first baseman Jacob Schrader, who threw to second for a force out. Shortstop Johan Camargo’s return throw to first sailed wide of the bag for an error that allowed the lead runner to score.
Control issues have plagued Newcomb (3-2, 3.47 ERA) this season. In 57 innings he has walked 33 batters. Otherwise, Newcomb has put up strong numbers. He has recorded 58 strikeouts and allowed 45 hits. Opponents are hitting .226 against him. He also has allowed only one home run this season.
His numbers were similar before the Braves acquired him in the trade for Andrelton Simmons in November. In 150 2/3 innings in the past two seasons, he allowed 113 hits, but walked 82, to go with 186 strikeouts.
