PHILADELPHIA — Juan Jaime cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Gwinnett, meaning the erratic reliever with the triple-digit fastball will still have a chance to show the Braves whether he can produce at a level consistent enough to warrant a spot again on the major league roster.
The stocky right-hander was designated for assignment on April 13, a day after he walked three batters and gave up the winning run while recording just one out in a 4-3 loss to the Mets that ended the Braves’ season-opening five-game winning streak. He had a .571 opponents’ on-base percentage in two appearances despite not giving up a hit.
Jaime, 27, made the opening-day roster because he was out of minor league options and would’ve had to clear waivers before he could be sent down. The Braves figured another team would claim him if they tried to get him through waivers late in spring training, because of the potential that remains in that big power arm. So they kept him on the roster to start the season.
But it quickly became apparent they couldn’t stomach outings like the April 13 performance, so they dropped him and sent him to the waiver wire, not sure if another team would claim him but willing to take the risk. He was passed over by all team during the 10-day waiver period, now he’s back in Triple-A.
