John Smoltz attempts to qualify for U.S. Open

Former Braves pitcher John Smoltz attempts to qualify for the U.S. Open.

Former Braves pitcher John Smoltz competes in the U.S. open golf qualifier at the Marietta Country Club Monday.

The only pitcher in major-league history with more than 200 wins and 150 saves, Smoltz must finish in the top nine to advance to next month's sectional tournament in Roswell.

Success at the sectional would land the current Braves broadcaster in the U.S. Open in Pebble Beach in mid-June.

Smoltz finished the first nine in 3-over, including a double-bogey on the par-5 14th hole.
