Jason Heyward said if he had to do it over again, he probably wouldn’t have bunted with a runner at second base and nobody out Monday night against the Marlins.

Manager Fredi Gonzalez had left the decision up to Heyward, after Jordan Schafer doubled to lead off the ninth inning of a 2-2 game.

Heyward, who had only one sacrifice bunt in his career, popped out to the pitcher Carlos Marmol on his bunt attempt. The Braves left the bases loaded in the inning before winning on Evan Gattis’ two-run homer in the 10th.

“Looking back, I feel like I got two pitches to pull on the ground,” Heyward said. “…I was trying to play the game and try to do a little too much with the situation.”

Heyward said he was trying to ensure he advanced the runner by eliminating the possibility for a strikeout.

“I wanted the ball to be in play there,” Heyward said. “I was overthinking the situation. Looking back on it, it wouldn’t have hurt to just pull the ball again….I feel like I could have got a hit in that situation. Fastball/slider is his thing. Get him in the strike zone and get something down. There you go. Pull something, get him over, and maybe pull something through in the infield.”
