If Freddie Freeman keeps hitting and getting on base with runners in scoring position at the clip he’s maintained so far this season, the Braves first baseman will join quite an exclusive club at season’s end, provided he has enough chances to qualify.
Freeman was 17-for-41 (.417) with a .607 on-base percentage and .878 slugging percentage for a stunning 1.485 OPS in 61 plate appearances with runners in scoring position before Tuesday night’s game against the Phillies.
If he finishes the season with the minimum 100 plate appearances with runners in scoring position to qualify, Freeman could become just the third player to post a .600 or higher OBP with runners in scoring position over a full season since OBP became an official stat in 1984.
Barry Bonds did it five times with the Giants in 2001-2004 and 2006 and Manny Ramirez posted a .605 OBP with runners in scoring position for the Red Sox in 2002.
