2 former Braves managers elected into Hall of Fame

Retired Braves manager Bobby Cox is joined by Joe Torre and Tony La Russa as unanimous selections into baseball's Hall of Fame. The three will be inducted July 27 in Cooperstown, N.Y.

In 25 seasons as the Braves' manager, Bobby Cox led Atlanta to the 1995 World Series title and 14 straight division titles.

Bobby Cox's managerial career began in 1978 with Atlanta, but he was fired after four seasons. Cox returned to Atlanta in 1990, and following one losing season he went on one of the most successful regular-season runs by any skipper, leading the Braves to 14 straight division titles and a World Series championship in 1995.

Joe Torre is one of five managers to win at least four World Series titles, which he did with the New York Yankees in 1996 and 1998-2000. Torre played with the Milwaukee Braves and Atlanta Braves from 1960 to 1968. He replaced Bobby Cox as manager in 1982, and was fired in 1984 after two consecutive years finishing as runner-up in the division.

Tony La Russa managed three teams the Chicago White Sox (1979–1986), Oakland Athletics (1986–1995) and St. Louis Cardinals (1996–2011), winning championships with Oakland in 1989 and St. Louis in 2006 and 2011. As a player, he played one season with the Atlanta Braves in 1971.

Hall of Famer Phil Niekro, who played for Cox (center) and Torre (right) and played with La Russa for a time in the Braves organization, said the Hall of Fame got "three kings of managing."

Two other former Braves - Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine - are newcomers to this year's Hall of Fame ballot (to be announced Jan. 8, 2014). At the chance of entering the Hall of Fame with those two Bobby Cox told reporters: "It would be quite an honor to go in with those two guys. I just hope Glav and Mad Dog can be on the stage with me. That would be the final finishing touch, going in with those two."
