The Houston Astros selected Dazmon Cameron (6-0, 186) with the 37th pick in the 2015 MLB Draft in Secaucus, New Jersey.

Cameron, son of former big-leaguer Mike Cameron, played center field at Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy in McDonough, Georgia. He finished his senior season batting .455 with a 1.491 OPS to go along with eight home runs, 32 RBIs, 17 stolen bases and just one error in 27 games.

Cameron fell significantly on day one of the draft. Online mock drafts had him going as high as No. 1 to the Arizona Diamondbacks, but most pegged him as the fourth or fifth pick.

Baseball America national writer Teddy Cahill said Cameron’s skills in center could give him more upside than another baseball product from McDonough: Jason Heyward.

“Perhaps the biggest difference is that Dazmon is a center fielder now and there are plenty of guys that think he’ll stay in center field,” Cahill said. “Whereas Heyward was a part-time center fielder (in high school) and was not going to stay at that position. … When you talk about upside, premium defensive positions up the middle get extreme weight.”

Cameron’s committed to Florida State.
