Cleveland activated 20-year veteran Jason Giambi from the 60-day disabled list. Manager Terry Francona was pleased to have Giambi available. Giambi, 43, had not played for the Tribe since June 11 due to left knee inflammation, but he remained a presence in the clubhouse.
“He stuck his head in today, he had a little bounce in his step,” Francona said of Giambi. “I think it means a lot to G. I think this has been hard on G this year. He never once uttered a frustrating word to anybody, but I don’t think for one minute that this has been easy for him. I respect him more now than I used to, which is hard.”
Giambi — who struck out in a pinch-hit appearance in the ninth inning of Monday’s 12-1 loss — recently made three rehab appearances with Double-A Akron. The five-time All-Star went 2-for-9 with a pair of doubles and five strikeouts.
“What 43-year-old guy who has that many years goes to Double-A and gets at-bats? Nobody. Except for G,” Francona said.
Royals
The Royals recalled Eric Hosmer, their regular first baseman, from his injury rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Omaha on Monday after just two games with the Storm Chasers. He went 3-for-10 with a home run, a walk and three RBIs. On Sunday night, Hosmer’s homer helped Omaha secure a spot in the Pacific Coast League playoffs, but his rehab stint was declared over.
“We need offense, and after the game last night, our scouts that were there watching said he’s ready. So we got him back up here, see if we can get some runs on the board,” manager Ned Yost said.
Hosmer last played with the Royals on July 31.
Tigers
Detroit continues to be cautious with right-hander Anibal Sanchez, who has been on the disabled list since Aug. 9 with a major strain of his right pectoralis. Manager Brad Ausmus says Sanchez is feeling better, but there is no timetable for the veteran starter to resume throwing. Sanchez posted an 8-5 record with a 3.46 ERA in 21 starts prior to his injury.
Twins
Minnesota called up left-hander Logan Darnell and right-hander Michael Tonkin from Triple-A Rochester, and selected the contracts of right-handers A.J. Achter and Lester Oliveros.
“It’s some fresh arms for our bullpen,” Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. “We’ve had three guys on the bench for an awful long time here. So this will be huge to get some fresh people up here.”
White Sox
Carlos Rodon, Chicago’s top pick in the 2014 draft, the third selection overall and the top White Sox prospect according to MLB.com, was not among players added to the 40-man roster. The lefty Rodon had with 38 strikeouts, 13 walks and no home runs allowed over 24 innings with Triple-A Charlotte.
