BOSTON – After cringing when Andrelton Simmons got hit in the hand by a pitch Monday night, the Braves got another injury scare Tuesday when pitcher Alex Wood was struck in the head by a hard-hit fly ball during pregame batting practice at Fenway Park.

Scheduled to start Wednesday’s game against the Red Sox in Atlanta, Wood was examined and cleared after the incident, a Braves spokesman said.

Wood was in the outfield fielding fly balls with other pitchers, as is normal procedure. He was standing near the Green Monster left-field wall when a ball hit him on the top of his head and then caromed off the wall.

“No damage,” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “He never even saw (the ball).”
