Braves quotes from Trevor Cahill, Sugar Ray Marimon and Fredi Gonzalez.
**FREDI GONZALEZ
On Trevor Cahill’s rough outing
“I’m going to chalk it up to he hasn’t pitched in a while. He hasn’t seen live hitters. When a sinker baller is giving up fly balls, that is not a good sign. He hasn’t seen live hitting. I know we threw him a little (simulated) game a few days ago but it’s just one of those things. Now he goes on to prepare for his next start. Hopefully this start here today, these couple of innings will get him going a little bit. (Sugar Ray) Marimon really did a nice job four our bullpen. He gave us four solid innings, got his first base hit as a major leaguer. We only used a couple (more) guys with him. (Andrew McKirahan) did a nice job getting two innings. Now tomorrow we will like we’ve got a fresh bullpen tomorrow to go after the Marlins.”
On Marimon’s performance in MLB debut
“He threw the ball over the plate. He threw a couple of nice changeups. His secondary pitches were good. When you’ve got these young kids, you always talk about you put them in a low-risk situation where there’s not real high leverage—this is the second time in the homestand we’ve brought in a guy with the bases loaded who had never pitched in the big leagues. You’ve got tip your hat to him. Nice going for his first outing. He did a nice job for our club.”
On what Cahill said when he left the game
“I didn’t talk to him. But when your sinkerballer is giving up fly balls… (maybe) too much rest. It’s just the first start of many so he’ll get his side (session) in a couple days and we’ll work from there.”
On Giancarlo Stanton’s 3-for-3 with two walks and four RBIs
“It’s just a matter of time when he gets hot. I thought we’ve done a pretty godo job historically neutralizing him as much as we can. But he’s not hit .140 or whatever he was hitting coming in here the rest of the season. He’s a good player, a really good player.”
On the offense after falling behind
“We had some opportunities. We got within four runs and got some people on base and just couldn’t get it going. We are an offense that if we get too far behind, it’s going to be tough for us to put numbers up. We are more of an offense if we are even or right there within a run, we can do some stuff. We can hit-and-run, we can create some opportunities. We had a chance to get back in it and we didn’t get it done.”
**TREVOR CAHILL
Fredi mentioned maybe too much rest, did you feel rusty?
“No, I felt good. It didn’t seem like I hadn’t been out there in a while. I just left a couple pitches up in the first and the biggest thing was the walks. I got ahead of (Michael) Morse, too, and ended up hitting him. Tried to go inside and just went a little bit too far in. Other than that, I felt good. I just couldn’t get the ball down decently and a team like that is just trying to see me up and I left too many up.”
On if he had nerves in first start with new team
“Not really. I felt comfortable out there. I just wasn’t able to execute. It’s unfortunate I could only get to the third. I think the relievers did a good job picking me up. It’s tough, especially first time with a new team. I didn’t feel any different than normal.”
On if he felt better as game went on
“I felt good. I just felt like I would make some good pitches, and then I would miss my spots and they’d get a hit. I couldn’t get away with any mistakes. The other team, you’ve’ got to give them credit. They battled. They had a good gameplan and I wasn’t about to adjust.”
**SUGAR RAY MARIMON (translation by bullpen coach Eddie Perez)
On making his major league debut
“I was waiting for this moment forever. Thank God that it finally happened.”
“I tried my best today.”
“I’m happy about my performance, but I would have felt way better if we got the win.”
