Braves quotes from Matt Wisler, Andrelton Simmons, A.J. Pierzynski and Fredi Gonzalez after Monday’s win at Milwaukee.
**A.J. PIERZYNSKI
On early run support for Wisler
“It was nice. Wis threw the ball well. He got a little tired, a little out of gas in the sixth inning. But he threw the ball well. He well when he was aggressive. He threw all his pitches for strikes. It was a good outing. I know is last road outing didn’t go so well, so for him to come out and pitch the way he did and get a win, was huge.”
Beat a team that had won eight straight and was scoring a lot of runs in that streak
“Yeah, these guys came in hot. I know watching video before the game, these guys were all hitting. They were raking, every one of them. So for him (Wisler) to come in and do what he did…. He gives up a home run, then settles down nicely. He shut them down until we were able to get some runs, and then just kind of hold them off. He did really good, and the bullpen was awesome.”
On Avilan getting a couple of lefties out in big situation
“Yeah, Scooter Gennett nailed it tonight. I mean, that was one of the all-time best swings I’ve ever seen. (Laughter.) Yeah, he (Avilan) did goot. Against Parra, a guy who’s been on fire, got him to hit a ground ball. And then he got Scooter to hit a nice, weak ground ball to shortstop. So he did a good job, especially after a tough at-bat by (Hernan) Perez for a double. He did a good job. Everyone did. Aardsma came in in a big situation and got an out. Avi did his job, Jim Johnson, and then Grilli. It was just a well-pitched game.”
What did you say to Gennett (when he swung at ball that hit him square in the front of his hip)
“I tried not to laugh, but then he started laughing, the umpire was laughing, everyone was kind of laughing. It’s just more of an embarrassment thing than anything, because I’ve done it. You’re not really hurt, you just know you’re going to be on Not Top 10 for the rest of your life.”
**FREDI GONZALEZ
On Kelly Johnson’s three early RBI
“He had a real good night driving in runs (Saturday), and then today he got us on the board driving in some runs early against Lohse. We had people on base the whole game, and I’m thinking, this is going to come back to haunt us, because you leave that kind of people on base against their offense, the way they’ve been swinging the bat, you go, it’s just a matter of time.”
On Wisler’s performance
“Wisler did a nice job. And I think it was nice that … I could have easily taken him out there against Ramirez (in the sixth), but I thought that was a good development moment to let him face Ramirez. Even though he walked him, he didn’t give in to him, still made some quality pitches. You bring in Aardsma, he gets us out of it. Our bullpen did a nice job closing them out.”
Wisler made some really hot-hitting guys look bad tonight with a variety of pitches
“He’s got a nice repertoire. Different pitches, and he’s not afraid to throw them in different counts, even when he’s behind in the count.”
Braun had 10-game hitting streak before going 0-for-4 tonight
“I thought it was a matter of Wisler making some good pitches. I think A.J. handled him really well. A.J. swung the bat, our top of the order guys got on base, Kelly Johnson drove in three. It was a good all-around game.”
On Maybin’s sliding catch going into the wall
“Mabes is a quality, solid center fielder. He can go get ‘em.”
“Simmons gets involved, threw a guy out at the plate. He only got one hit today, but he’s a big part of the game. He can make a different, both offensively and defensively.”
On Simmons’ relay throw to cut down runner trying to score
“The runner’s never safe. With the ball in his hand, he’s looking to get an out. We’ve had the privilege of seeing him every single day, and he’s looking to get an out, and he’s accurate and may have the best arm among shortstops.”
**MATT WISLER
Seemed like you were able to shake off that leadoff homer in first and just move on
“Yeah, it was just a bad executed pitch, down and in, the guy’s got power there. I just missed my location there. After that I think I settled in for the most part. Early on my slider wasn’t as good as it was last game. Just kind of not getting extension on it. Working through that, the fourth or fifth inning I started to get a better feel for that. I had to battle a little bit in the fifth and sixth inning to make some pitches. I had really good defense tonight, they helped me, they made a ton of good plays. A.J. behind the plate was as good as usual.”
On getting the early run support, four in the first two innings
“It’s huge. It kind of puts the momentum in our favor, getting those runs, guys jumping on (Kyle Lohse) early, allowed me to go out there with a little more confidence. Now I can go out knowing I don’t have to shut them out, I can give up one or two runs and know we’ll still be in this game.”
On Maybin’s sliding catch at CF wall
“Unbelievable catch. I threw that slider and I thought I had him out front. I didn’t think he was going to get it that much, and I looked back and Cam’s running out there, and I’m like, oh boy. And then he made the catch. That’s huge. To get a first out like that it kind of settles down the inning.”
**ANDRELTON SIMMONS
On Wisler
“He did good. Tough park to pitch in, tough pitchers’ park. And he did good. He gave up a run early, but he maintained. He limited the damage, gave up run on a bloop single to left – you can’t control that. He gave up a run early and shut it down after that.”
On Simmons’ strong relay throw to the plate
“That was an easy one. It was good, but it was short. Just had to make a good throw.”
