Braves quotes after Friday’s road win a against Marlins
MIAMI — Braves quotes from Julio Teheran, Chris Johnson and manager Fredi Gonzalez after the Braves' 3-2 win Friday at Miami.
**FREDI GONZALEZ
After the Stanton homer in first inning, Teheran had a lot of low-stress innings
“One pitch. I think it was a nothing slider over the plate to Stanton. He hit it, but other than that I thought he was in command of the game the whole time. And for only getting three runs I thought we hit the ball harder than any other game this year. We were hitting rockets right at people all night long.
“We got the win. Two big outs in the eighth inning with Avilan and Carpenter, and then Craig 1-2-3 in the ninth to get us back in the winning ways.”
On Teheran helping self with two hits including the big double
“That’s why those guys, you tend to keep them in the game longer. Because you don’t have to pinch-hit, they can handle the bat in a bunt situation or whatever situation you’ve got them in, and they help themself.”
On Heyward’s game-tying triple and solid work
“He led off the game with a base hit, we get back-to-back base hits there and get nothing out of it. And then a big add-on run there with both of those guys, Heyward driving in Teheran and then B.J. driving in Heyward. B.J.’s having some good at-bats, hitting the ball hard. You would have thought the score … it wasn’t indicative of how well we swung the bats.”
On Teheran maturing, not letting a game get out of hand like it might’ve in the past if he gave up early 2-run homer
“The more he goes out there, the more impressed I get by him, by his demeanor and the way he goes about his business. I think you’re just watching him grow up in front of your face.”
On Teheran throwing a lot of fastballs after the slider that Stanton homered on in first inning
“I thought him and Gattis got on the same page right after that first inning. They started talking and you saw them talking on the bench and having different gameplans. I always talk to Gattis about this – you can have the best-laid gameplan, but sometimes your pitcher doesn’t have the repertoire (that night) that the gameplan calls for and you’ve got to make adjustments. And then maybe later on, the fourth or the fifth inning, they get those pitches going again. And I think Gattis getting better doing that.”
On the win stopping skid
“It was a good outing. I’m real proud of the way we bounced back after yesterday’s loss against the Red Sox.”
**JULIO TEHERAN
On getting into a groove right after the Stanton homer in first inning
“The only mistake that I made, and when you make a mistake here you pay for it. The rest of the game I was just concentrating and I was just focused on the game and trying not to make a mistake. I think I pitched good.”
On Stanton not being a factor after the homer, what did you do different?
“I just tried to do the same thing I’ve been doing with him. I just made a mistake (in the first inning) and threw my slider that I thought was working, but it wasn’t working like I’m used to. That happens sometimes when you don’t have (all) your stuff.”
On getting two hits including big leadoff double
“I thought right there that I’ve got to start a rally. I was just trying to put the ball in play, and that’s what I did. I think that was the biggest play of this game.”
On Fredi letting you stay in the game to lead off that inning
“I felt like I needed to start a rally, do something to keep my team in the game.”
On his penchant for getting locked in after giving up an early run or big hit
“Every time they get a base hit or a home run, that’s when I start being a little more focused on the game. It doesn’t mean that I wasn’t before, but I get a little more focused and tough. I try to be tougher.”
On helping team snap losing streak
“I know we’ve been losing, and that didn’t happen this game. It’s nice to do my job today and help the team.”
**CHRIS JOHNSON
On Teheran
“He’s a stud. He earned this one. We’re still not throwing too many crooked numbers up there, so he had our back tonight and we gave him just enough.”
On getting one of the team’s big hits with RISP in the late innings
“It’s really nice to come up with a big hit with a guy in scoring position. And God, B.J. had a great at-bat, especially down 0-2, battled, got the ball to the outfield and got that guy in. That was the at-bat of the night. Then Teheran and our bullpen took care of the rest.”
On Teheran getting a couple of hits including the opposite-field double
“He can swing it, man. (Laughs) I like that approach too, that’s all me there hitting the ball the other way, sneaking it down the first-base line. I love that stuff, so that was a good swing.” (Smiles and nods to Teheran at locker across the way.)
