The Braves placed right-handed reliever Jose Ramirez on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday with right shoulder inflammation.
Ramirez, once one of the more reliable arms in the bullpen, has had back-to-back disastrous appearances. The first came in Chicago on Saturday, when he was tagged for five runs in the Braves’ meltdown that turned a 10-2 lead into a 14-10 loss.
The second occurred Tuesday, when Ramirez took the mound in the 10th inning of a 1-1 game against the Phillies. He allowed four runs, leading to a 5-1 Phillies win.
In 6-1/3 innings, Ramirez has a 17.05 ERA with more walks (eight) than strikeouts (seven). He’s given up nine runs and walked five in his past 1 1/3 innings.
Ramirez cited shoulder tightness after the second game. Braves manager Brian Snitker said Wednesday he suspected there was an injury, but was unaware of specifics until Tuesday’s postgame.
“He’s a tough kid and wanted to work through things,” Snitker said. “I had always felt like there was something going on, like he’s not right. Then after the game yesterday, he came and it wasn’t right. So we’re going to get him looked at and we’ll see. He’ll get an MRI and we’ll see what’s going on.”
Left-hander Jesse Biddle was recalled in Ramirez's place, completing the 26-year-old's unique path to the majors.
