How the game was won: Andrelton Simmons hit a bases-clearing, three-RBI double as part of a five-run rally against Padres starter James Shields to tie the game 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth. Juan Uribe was originally called out at the plate, but the play was reviewed and replays showed he clearly beat the tag.

The bullpen threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings after starter Mike Foltynewicz gave up five runs on 12 hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Joey Terdoslavich hit a pinch-hit homer in the eighth to give Atlanta the 6-5 lead. It was his first home run in the majors.

Number: 3. The number of pitches brand-new Braves reliever David Aardsma needed to get the third out in the top of the sixth. All three were strikes, and he got Justin Upton to pop out to shallow right field.

What's next: Things don't get any easier tomorrow for the Braves against Tyson Ross (3-5, 3.75 ERA), whose record is somewhat deceiving. Williams Perez (1-0, 3.55 ERA) looks to bounce back after walking five batters in five innings in his last start.
