Braves new manager Fredi Gonzalez

Fredi Gonzalez, 46, will succeed his former boss and mentor Bobby Cox, who retired after 29 seasons as a major league manager, including 25 with the Braves.

Fredi Gonzalez has been hired as the Braves' new manager. Gonzalez, 46, a onetime Braves third base coach, will succeed his former boss and mentor Bobby Cox.

Since fired by the Marlins in June, Fredi Gonzalez (left) had been regarded as the most likely successor to Bobby Cox, who retired after 25 seasons managing the Braves.

Bobby Cox holds the record for ejections by a manager. Fredi Gonzalez trails the retired Braves manager by more than 120.

Fredi Gonzalez (right) joined the Marlins organization in 1992. He rose through the ranks joining the big league club in 1999 as third base coach for the 1999 and 2000 seasons, where he served under skipper Tony Perez (left).

A native of Havana, Fredi Gonzalez was the Braves' third-base coach from 2003-06, after coming to the Braves organization as Triple-A Richmond manager in 2002.

On Oct. 3, 2006, Fredi Gonzalez was named the manager of the Florida Marlins within hours of Joe Girardi being fired.

In nearly four seasons as the Florida Marlins' manager, Fredi Gonzalez compiled a 276-279 record. He was Sporting News Manager of the Year in 2008 and had his best season in 2009, when the club went 87-75 to finish second in the NL East.

Fredi Gonzalez's exit from the Marlins was heightened when he pulled Marlins star Hanely Ramirez from a game after the shortstop failed to hustle after a ball he booted into the outfield.
