Atlanta Braves have announced they will retire former pitcher Greg Maddux's jersey number and he will be inducted into the team's Hall of Fame.

The Braves honored former pitcher Greg Maddux last summer by retiring his No. 31 jersey number and inducting him into the Braves Hall of Fame. Over 11 seasons in Atlanta, Maddux went 194-88 with a 2.63 ERA.

Maddux was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 1984, and made his major league debut in September 1986. His first appearance in a major league game was as a pinch runner. In his first seven seasons in Chicago, he went 95-75 and won the first of his four straight Cy Young awards.

The rotation of Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, Denny Neagle and Maddux was essential to the Braves' run of 14 straight division titles. Glavine, Smoltz and Maddux combined to win six Cy Young awards with the Braves.

Maddux won a record 18 Gold Glove awards. He was the N.L. recipient for pitchers every year since 1990 -- with the exception of 2003, when Mike Hampton interrupted the streak.

Maddux pitched in 13 Division Series contests, 17 League Championship games and five World Series games where he posted a 3.28 ERA over 197-2/3 innings. His World Series ERA is 2.09.

Maddux had a career .171 batting average with a .191 on-base percentage.

In 2004, Maddux returned to Chicago where he pitched until mid-2006, when he was traded the Los Angeles Dodgers. In his second stint with the Cubs, he recorded his 300th career win and 3,000 strikeout.

In 2007, Maddux signed a one-year contract (with an option for a second year) worth $10 million a year with the Padres. Maddux went 20-20 in nearly two seasons in San Diego.

Maddux, an eight-time All-Star, announced his retirement in December 2008. His streak of 17 straight seasons with 15 or more wins remains the longest such streak in baseball history.
