Braves have already used 49 players in ‘15, near record
MILWAUKEE — When relievers Arodys Vizcaino and David Carpenter made their season debuts Tuesday, it raised to 49 the total number of players used by the Braves this season, two more than used by any other major league team.
That’s 10 more players than the Braves used in the entire 2014 season, and just one shy of the franchise record the Braves set in 2007 — and this season is barely past the halfway point, with 77 games still to be played.
The only other team that used more than 44 players before Wednesday was Tampa Bay (47).
Here’s another remarkable statistic reflecting Braves roster changes, which began last fall and continue unabated: In Tuesday night’s 4-3 win at Milwaukee, 15 of 16 Braves who participated in the game were not in the organization last season.
The lone exception was shortstop Andrelton Simmons, who was out of the lineup Tuesday for a rest, but entered in the eighth inning as part of a double-switch. Every other Braves pitcher and position player who got in the game was with another organization last year.
The Braves have already had 12 players make their major league debuts this season: pitchers Manny Banuelos, Matt Wisler, Williams Perez, Brandon Cunniff, Cody Martin, Andrew McKirahan, John Cornely, Sugar Ray Marimon, Jake Brigham and Ryan Kelly, and infielders Adonis Garcia and Daniel Castro.
Jenkins promoted: Another Braves pitching prospect moved a step closer to the majors Wednesday when Tyrell Jenkins was promoted to Triple-A Gwinnett. He'll start Thursday against Norfolk.
Jenkins, who turns 23 on July 20, was 5-5 with a 3.00 ERA in 16 starts at Double-A Mississippi, with 59 strikeouts and 41 walks in 93 innings. His 84 hits allowed included only three homers.
