Braves give Foltynewicz extra rest, place him on DL

The Braves placed Mike Foltynewicz on the 10-day disabled list with right-triceps tightness, retroactive to June 13.

Foltynewicz left his start Tuesday after 73 pitches with triceps tightness. He said he began feeling it after his previous start.

The Braves weren’t sure Foltynewicz would be ready to make his next start. He threw a bullpen session Saturday afternoon before the team’s announcement.

“We have such a long way to go, he felt enough that we thought we’d just give him a few extra days,” manager Brian Snitker said.

There were several benefits to the transaction: For one, Foltynewicz receives extra rest. He’s been one of the team’s two best starters this season, and owns a 0.86 ERA over his past seven starts.

Julio Teheran was reinstated from the DL as the corresponding move. Placing Foltynewicz on the DL saved the Braves another 25-man roster player who would have gone in Teheran’s place.

Teheran’s return would’ve given the Braves six active starters.

Snitker suggested the team will consider shifting a starter to the bullpen. Placing Foltynewicz on the DL affords them more time to decide how they’ll handle the surplus.

Foltynewicz will be eligible to return June 23 against the Orioles.
