The Braves announced they traded minor league outfielder Connor Joe to the Los Angeles Dodgers for $500k in international bonus pool money on Sunday afternoon.

Joe was acquired from the Pirates in the Sean Rodriguez trade Aug. 5. The trade saved the Braves over $7 million, including Rodriguez’s $5.75 million salary for 2018. In other words, the return was secondary.

The Braves exceeded their international spending limit a year ago, signing top-ranked prospects such as Kevin Maitan. They recently reached a deal with Korean shortstop Jihwan Bae for what's believed to be approximately $300,000 due to the Braves' spending limit after splurging a year ago.

Adding further bonus pool money allows the Braves more breathing room on the international market. General manager John Coppolella and the front office have emphasized international scouting and acquired additional funds in year’s past.

Some of the Braves highest regarded prospects, including outfielders Ronald Acuna and Cristian Pache, and Maitan, came from the international market.

Joe, 24, was a first round pick in 2014. He slashed .251/.346/.350 across three minor league seasons.
